A collective presentation from the works of the Eindhoven based designers Yoad David Luxembourg and Daniela Pais. Design Species was created in October 2007 to present an interdisciplinary experience of products which were developed to create alternative means of consumption.
As an exposition, Design species questions the origin of fashion and the subjective (fashionable) selection that exists in our culture, as suggested by its theme: 'On the Origin of design species by means of fashionable selection', which was adjusted from Charles Darwin's book 'On the Origin of species by means of natural selection'.
This collaboration and a partnership between 2 international designers began earlier in 2007. After 4 years of working internationally on her own brand: Krv Kurva Design, Daniela Pais had just graduated from the design academy’s Master program Man& Humanity with her project ‘Clothing Species’, and David Luxembourg was finishing the exposition tour of his ‘The Volution’ project. They discovered that their projects complemented one another in their approach to design, their research and their subjects and decided to work on a common show case that dealt with the ‘means of fashionable selection’ - showing the cycle of fashion design and its related thinking in a micro environment
The products in the design species are looking both inwards and outwards from fashion for ways to improve the interaction between the production of a fashion item, or accessory, the item/accessory itself and the consumer, resulting in a series of playful, interactive products with a deep underlying concept of personal experience, exploration of identity, emotional awareness and sustainability.
Design Species presented their works in the Salone Di Mobile 08 in Milan, as a part of the Designersblock 2.0 exposition, with the theme ‘WORK/SHOP SHOW/ROOM’ that signified the smart use of space in the exhibition, turning it into a working atelier in which products could be bought – WORK/SHOP – during the day, and into a fashion catwalk and product presentation room in which products were viewed with greater attention– SHOW/ROOM - during the night. In October 2008 Design Species presented again in Dutch Design Week 08 exposing the next generations of their collections and products and offering a powerfully imaginative and interdisciplinary exposition, supported with live performances evry night.
